Aperture

(Base Knowledge III)

Manual setting in DSLR mainly covers arrangement in Aperture Value (A), Shutter Speed (S), ISO, and White-Balance (Custom WB). So, it gives more valuable experiment for creating unique and beautifull moment in a picture. And here’s the review :

(I.) Aperture

The Aperture value shows diaphragm size of the lens. In order to controls light that step into censor built-in camera via aperture in lens. Aperture value is also called F-Number (F). More biger value, more littleer diameter / diaphragm –and on the contrary.

Examples of aperture value in a row :
f/1.4 , f/2.8 , f/4.0 , f/5.6 , f/8 , f/11 , f/16 , f/22 , f32

Above shows the F-number from the larger number (f/1.4) until smallest (f/32), where all of values show the light quantity that enter to into lens. Other notation of F-number are F1.4, F2.8, F4.0,. . .. depend on market strategy of each product.

How to get a notation like that? Still remember mathematics formula to count vast a circle?? to divide vast be half from previous, it must be divided with rank root 2 (1.41421356).

Example (rounded off) :
- Maximal aperture = 1
- Aperture 1/2 maximal = 1 1/1.4 = 1/1.4
- Aperture 1/4 maximal = 1/1.4 1/1.4 = 1/2.8
- Aperture 1/8 maximal = 1/2.8 1/1.4 = 1/4.0
- Aperture 1/16 maximal = 1/4.0 1/1.4 = 1/5.6
- and so on. . .

Then we can count the aperture value furthermore : f/1.4, f/2.8, f/4.0, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22, f32 … Arrangement aperture from f/1.4 to f/2.8 will make light decreases half from previous because it diameter became smaller into a half.

NB : - Aperture value (F-number) also influence the Depth of Field (DOF) : “smaller F-number : the foreground and background of the subject are blurred. larger F-number : the subject and its background and foreground are also focused on”

- Aperture value is one of the important element besides Shutter-Speed (S) and ISO that influence exposure.
